In the 1940's Eero Saarinen developed this pedestal table, along with the tulip chair, as part of his research of "organic furniture." MOMA announced a competition for "organic design in home furnishing collection" in which Eero Saarinen participated along with Charles Eames to create this now famous Saarinen table. This show and the corresponding pedestal table and other furniture he developed, represents the peak of Eero Saarinen's career in which these lasting icons of modern classic furniture were brought to the forefront. Eero Saarinen's ability to blend color, form and materials was remarkable. The Saarinen table from his pedestal collection is a reflection of this ability in this timeless classic.
Eero grew up in a household where drawing and painting were taken very seriously, and a devotion to quality and professionalism were instilled in him at an early age. He was taught that each object should be designed in its "next largest context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, environment in a city plan."
