Isamu Noguchi was one of America's most influential architects, furniture designers and artists of the 20th century. Born in the United States in 1904, he spent his youth in Japan until the age of 14. Isamu Noguchi started his college education at Columbia, but dropped out in 1924 to pursue a career in sculpture. Noguchi's sculptures went on to be world famous. His sculpture works were used around the world, from New York to Israel to Japan.

Isamu Noguchi designed a number of gardens, lamps an furniture as well. Many of his lamp and furniture designs are still manufactured today. His work with George Nelson, Charles Eames and Paul Laszlo during the late 1940s have become legendary in the world of modern furniture.

Through his work as a sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi considered himself "an interpreter of the East to the West." Informed by nature, his highly abstract and sculptural furniture designs were often intended to express the essence of natural landscape. Isamu Noguchi's designs, such as the Isamu Noguchi Ottoman, are reflections of the artists struggle to see, alter, and recreate his natural surroundings.
